Job Description

The Associate Director, Crystal Development is a results oriented self-starter who enjoys a hands-on management role and has a broad background in process development and transfer between process development and regulated process manufacturing environment such as ISO or GMP. He/she is responsible for leading a compact group of scientists and technicians thereby conceiving, planning and developing Redlens’ CZT crystal R&D programs and rapid detector prototyping and evaluation. This position will work in close co-operation with both the manufacturing group and with CZT detector development group to identify and transfer improvements in: methods targeted towards increased crystal yields, productivity and semi-conductor quality, CZT crystal growth equipment, and in rapid prototyping of new crystal material in to standard detectors for quality evaluation. The management of longer term, strategic and collaborative R&D projects for the development of our state-of-the-art crystal technology to new applications will also be a feature of the job. This will require project management and coordination of these projects with associated external partners and funders.

He/she has an impressive track record of managing process development and optimization, working closely with multi-disciplinary teams, both internal and external, and taking projects from concept through to transfer into a regulated production environment.

This position reports to the Vice President, R&D and works closely with the Vice President Operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the conceptualization, prioritization, implementation, statistical analysis, technology transfer, and documentation of Redlen crystal growth process improvements;
  • Prepare and maintain development project schedules, progress reports & analysis, and transfer protocols to production;
  • Lead and mentor a multi-disciplinary team of six or more scientists and technicians;
  • Manage annual planning and implementation for the departmental budget;
  • Drive continuous process improvements and their ‘release to manufacturing’ via hand-off package under change control protocols to production group including BOM, schematics, stock codes, documentation, operator training and test procedures;
  • Manage internal and external customer and partner relationships, and collaborative projects.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in process development, continuous process improvement, and/or developmental research management related to process-based manufacturing operations;
  • Project management experience ideally relating to technology transfer between R&D and manufacture, and rapid prototyping / scale-up;
  • Track record of translating research and development improvements in to a regulated quality (ISO, GMP) manufacturing environment;
  • Demonstrated application of a data-driven approach to developmental research, including statistical design and analysis, variance reduction; and the modelling, monitoring and control of complex fluid-dynamic growth systems;
  • Experience with CZT or other semiconductor crystal growth processes is an advantage;
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in providing technical leadership and mentoring to a compact cross-functional, multi-disciplinary team;
  • Excellent time and priority management skills, ability to handle multiple simultaneous programs;
  • Budget planning and management experience;
  • Strong communication, written, oral and interpersonal skills;
  • Exceptional attention to detail;
  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering or applied science is required. A research degree is desirable.
